Safety Assessment & Consultation

OSHA regulations and ANSI Z359.2 consensus guidelines require that employers conduct regular, periodic fall hazard assessments (FHAS) to identify and assess the potential fall risks in the workplace as part of your company’s fall protection policy and plan.

Periodic hazard assessment is a living process that ensures that recognized fall hazards are identified, assessed & prioritized for risk and mitigated.  Follow up training, observation/enforcement, inspection and maintenance are musts to ensure a safe work place.

As stated in the ANSI Z359.2:

“The survey provides information as to the type of hazard, basic configuration of the hazard (graphics/drawings/pictures), exposure, frequency, height, solution(s) and rescue.  The survey should generate a list of the fall hazards from highest to lowest priority.  This will assist in arranging for solutions to those hazards that present the greatest risk.”

Fall Hazard assessments are performed by a competent or qualified person.  When a hazard is identified an appropriate control in the hierarchy of controls is selected and the hazard is mitigated.  The preferred hierarchy of control of falls is Elimination, Prevention, Arrest and Administrative.

Once the hazard is identified and the proper mitigation of control is selected in the hierarchy of controls, then the necessary engineering, installation and training are performed.  Rescue provisions are selected as part of the process.  From that point observation and enforcement along with proper inspection and maintenance are paramount to ensuring worker safety.
